Consumer Disclosure in Credit Reports

A credit report, also called a credit file disclosure, is a record of a consumer's credit history. This history is collected and organized by credit reporting agencies, also called credit bureaus. The bureaus work with various creditors, lenders, and financial institutions to gather data related to consumer credit.

Credit reports also have consumer disclosures on who has been looking at the report. Each inquiry made to look at an individual's credit file is recorded. Inquiries are primarily made by creditors or lenders. They may also be made by employers, landlords, and utility companies who seek to asses a consumer's credit worthiness, based on his credit history. Each inquiry must be disclosed on the credit file. Consumers should know that all inquiries should be authorized. If there are any unauthorized inquiries on a credit report, the consumer can dispute the record and have it cleared. Too many inquiries hurt one's credit score.

Consumers should periodically check their credit file disclosures at least once a year. They are eligible under federal law to receive one free copy of their credit reports every 12 months. The credit reports can be retrieved from each of the credit reporting agencies.

If consumers desire to see their bureau scores, there are many offers that provide both the bureau credit reports and scores for free. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion each have membership programs that offer such solutions. Often these are part of free trial memberships, so consumers should be aware of the full disclosures involved.
