Credit Bureaus
There are three major credit bureaus in the U.S. They are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. These bureaus are also commonly referred to as credit reporting agencies. Consumers can contact any one of these bureaus to obtain their credit reports. Their credit files at each of the bureaus may be slightly different, but should be fairly consistent in terms of the reporting. It is important that consumers review their bureau credit histories for reporting errors. These hurt credit scores which in turn make it difficult for people to borrow or finance.Equifax is the largest of the three credit bureaus. It has also been around for the longest. TransUnion is the smallest and is the youngest of the three.
Bureau credit reports are often offered for free, if one knows where to look for them. Usually they're offered as part of a trial package. Sign up for a trial credit monitoring service and get all three credit bureaus and scores for free. The free trial for the credit monitoring service varies with each different offer. Some have longer trial periods than others. However, usually during this time the member can access their bureau credit reports an unlimited number of times. It's highly recommended that users print a copy of their credit reports to keep on file to use for future reference.
