Credit Check

Consumers should periodically check their credit reports. Credit reports are files that are maintained by credit bureaus. They document consumer credit histories which are recorded by various creditors and lenders. A credit check will reveal what's being noted and who's been looking at a person's credit report.

There are three credit reporting agencies. They are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Consumers can check their credit reports from each of these agencies. The files maintained by each of these bureaus may differ slightly, due to reporting discrepancies. Not all information is uniformly reported to all three bureaus. It is usually good practice to check all three credit files at once for reporting errors and inconsistencies. Inaccurate credit reporting can lead to lower credit scores and to more challenging lending terms.
