Credit Score
A credit score serves as an important indicator of a person's credit worthiness. Creditors and lenders use this number to assess credit risk before determining the terms they are willing to lend or finance someone. A high credit score typically equates to favorable terms whereas a low credit score may mean higher interest rates. Each of the credit reporting agencies has their own credit score. Each bureau calculates their score differently, but all base their calculations on factors found on an individual's credit history. The three credit bureau scores should be fairly close in number.
A FICO score is another type of credit score. It's produced by a company called the Fair Isaac Corporation and is probably the most popularly used credit score. It is important to know one's FICO score because the majority of financial institutions look at it in their risk assessment calculations.
There are many credit report offers that include bureau credit scores. In many instances, consumers can get both for free. Usually if one is resourceful enough, he can find several of these free offers by doing an Internet search. Free credit reports and free credit scores are usually offered when consumers subscribe to a credit reporting membership type program. While this may seem like a side step, many merchants offer free trials into their memberships so it isn't all that much of an inconvenience. A member will find access to one or three of their credit reports and credit bureau scores during his free trial.
Free credit scores can be easy to find. However, only a select number of merchants offer free access to consumer FICO scores. To find free credit report offers that include FICO scores, look at Equifax and FICO offers. These two merchants provide FICO scores in their portfolio of credit management products and services. Bureau credit scores include those from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
